noguchi rocking stools Designed by Isamu Noguchi, 1954
In 1954, immediately after returning from Japan, Isamu Noguchi presented
the design for a Rocking Stool to furniture producer Hans Knoll. In design
terms, the stool evokes the dumbbell-shape of African stools. Noguchi
wanted to use a material which was then new for furniture production,
namely polyurethane, but finally chose a more luxurious material
combination instead. The slightly curved seat and base sections were turned
in teak or walnut then waxed, the joints composed of chromed steel wire
rods slanted diagonally to form a central, round foot, paying tribute to
wire artist and furniture designer Harry Bertoia.
The unusual sitting feeling is also experienced by users of the
stool's lower version - designed for children. The Rocking Stools
later metamorphosed into a small table that was advertised as a companion
to Harry Bertoia's wire children's chair. On his own initiative,
in 1957 Hans Knoll has the small table enlarged to full size. Chromed steel rod, stained maple wood in Maple Tone or Walnut Tone finish. Available in both high (42.5 cm) and low (25 cm) versions. The seat on both
the high and low version is 36 cm in diameter.
